Applications for Expansion Joints:

  • Power Generating Stations
Central power-generating stations, industrial power plants and power facilities aboard ships function safely and economically with expansion joints installed at strategic points in piping systems and between steam turbines.

  • Air Conditioning, Heating and Ventilating Systems
Efficient, low-cost air conditioning, heating and ventilating piping systems in industrial plants, hotels, motels, hospitals, stores, schools, apartments, commercial and institutional buildings and aboard ships are ideal applications for expansion joints.

Joints are available for practically all applications — chilled-water and condenser-water piping, suction and discharge sides of pumps, or adjacent to compressors, water-chiller inlets, outlets and risers.

  • Chemical and Industrial Process Piping Systems
Consulting mechanical engineers, mechanical contractors, pressure vessel designers, industrial plant engineers and turn-key engineering, and construction builders have always recognized the need to absorb movement in process piping systems.

As temperatures in piping systems increase or decrease, pipelines expand or contract; the total movement is a function of the coefficient of expansion of the pipe material.

If expansion and contraction, as well as other movements, are not absorbed, piping, valves and equipment may be seriously damaged, resulting in costly repairs, replacements, downtime and possible injuries to personnel.

Expansion joints for chemical and industrial process piping systems are well known for their exceptional strength and durability, giving long, virtually maintenance-free service even under the most demanding conditions of temperature, pressure, abrasion, erosion, stress and movement.

  • Aboard Ships
The failure to keep transmission of vibration at a minimum aboard tankers, cargo ships, passenger liners and naval vessels reduces operating efficiency. Space limitations aboard ships, with close piping systems make it advantageous to use expansion joints in air conditioning, heating, water-intake and discharge, sanitation and power-generating systems. Expansion joints are impervious to electrolytic decay, act as highly efficient dampeners of engine sound and vibration, and effectively compensate for stresses caused by the expansion and contraction of the ship's hull. The “working” of the ship itself dictates the need for flexibility in its piping systems.

  • Sewage Disposal Plants
Expansion joints are widely used in treatment plants designed to eliminate the pollution of waters surrounding heavily inhabited areas. Stress and expansion in long pipe runs carrying raw sewage are absorbed by expansion joints at strategic points throughout the systems. They are used on sludge pumps, suction and discharge sides of centrifugal pumps, the aeration blower, aeration line, grit-pump line and raw-sewage line.
